WASHINGTON - The Clinton administration yesterday calculated the cost of expanding NATO to bring in east European countries at up to $35 billion by 2009, a figure below previous private and congressional estimates.

In an effort to show that the US would get off relatively cheaply, the administration said Washington was expected to shoulder costs of only $1.5 billion to $2 billion over the same period.
