After almost 10 hours of deliberations, the foreman told Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins that they had failed to reach a majority verdict.

The Dublin Central Criminal Court has heard that the accused beat Mr Ward 20 times with a stick and shot him twice with a single-barrel shotgun.

The jury of eight men and four women will return to the Four Courts at 10.30am tomorrow to resume deliberations.
