Panmunjom - South Korea yesterday returned to the North the body of a North Korean soldier who was shot on the heavily fortified border, clearing the last hurdle to the resumption of peace talks this week.

Placed in a plain black coffin, the body was sent home through the border village of Panmunjom. The soldier was shot last Tuesday in the demilitarised zone (DMZ), the last flashpoint of the Cold War, which cuts across the Korean peninsula.

The two Koreas, the US and China are due to meet in New York this week to set an agenda for peace talks.
