A murder investigation  began tonight after a woman who was found unconscious in a house in the south inner city on Friday night died.

The woman (48) was discovered at approximately 9.40pm on Friday night at a house in James Street.

She was taken to St James's Hospital where she remained in a critical condition and died this evening.

It is believed the woman had suffered serious head injuries in an assault.

A man is currently being held in custody at Kevin Street Garda station in connection with the incident.

Yesterday he was questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
