Negotiations are underway between the Department of Health and a number of London hospitals to refer west of Ireland patients to smaller surgical centres which can now accept them for urgent by-pass surgery.
There are more than 300 referrals for heart operations alone from University College Hospital, Galway. Some patients have been waiting for treatment for more than four years.
