The vice chairwoman of Dublin Corporation's cultural committee, Ms Mary Freehill, proposed yesterday that a bronze plaque commemorating the poet Austin Clarke should be added to six other memorial plaques to Dublin writers in St Patrick's Park.

She said: "Austin Clarke is one of Dublin's most important poets and it is appropriate, in this the centenary year of his birth, that he takes his place alongside Joyce, Swift, Shaw, Synge, Yeats and Wilde."
