A YOUNG man has been killed in north Kerry in a collision between his motorcycle and a van.

The collision occurred at about 8.20am yesterday, in the townland of Ballinoe, about a mile from the village of Causeway on the Ballyheigue Road. The man was named locally as Shane Crickard (20) from the Ballyduff area.

The van driver was not seriously injured.

It was the latest in a series of fatal road traffic incidents in north Kerry and west Limerick in a matter of weeks.

They include the death of a four-year-old boy after he fell from a tractor near Abbeydorney two weeks ago, as well as the death last week of an 18-year-old from Abbeyfeale on the Listowel to Tarbert road after the car in which he was a back-seat passenger lost control .

The parish priest of Ballyduff, Fr Brendan Walsh, yesterday said the community was in mourning and it had lost a fine young man.
