The detention of a mother and daughter by gardai in Co Mayo five years ago should not have occurred, the State accepted in the High Court yesterday. Ms Kathleen Stiasny and Ms Rebekka Stiasny, of Downhill Road, Ballina, Co Mayo, had sued the State for false imprisonment and breach of constitutional rights.

When the case was called yesterday, a statement read by Mr Tom O'Connell, for Ireland and the Attorney General, said the Stiasnys were briefly detained in Castlebar on May 3rd, 1993. The statement read: "The State authorities have investigated the matter and are happy to confirm that the information leading to the detention of the Stiasnys was in error and that the detention should not, therefore, have occurred."

The Stiasnys are to get costs.
