The number of confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning in the north-east has risen by two to 36 in the outbreak being linked to cooked ham, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

A number of other suspect cases have also arisen in Meath, Louth and Cavan, and specimens are undergoing laboratory analysis, said FSAI director of communications Ms Eilis O'Brien.

A cooked meat unit attached to Augherskea Meats Ltd in Navan, Co Meath, has been closed voluntarily while investigations continue.
