Jakarta - Three refugees seeking a safe haven from communal violence in Indonesia's spice islands were beaten to death yesterday as the death toll from a week of bloodshed passed 500.

The three men were killed after they fled to the island of Ternate to escape unrest in neighbouring Halmahera, the official Antara news agency said.
