Podgorica - In a new act of defiance, the government of Montenegro has told the Yugoslav President, Mr Slobodan Milosevic, it will not send police to Kosovo to reinforce the overstretched Serb militia as they continue their slash-and-burn advance through Albanian villages.

Montenegro is the only republic in the Yugoslav federation alongside Serbia and it has been conducting an increasingly independent line since Mr Milo Djukanovic defeated Belgrade's favourite to become president last year. His party went on to win elections to parliament in May.
