PODGORICA, Montenegro - Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic yesterday survived attempts to force him from power for his attacks on Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, but Serbian leaders kept up their pressure for his removal.
The dispute has pitted pragmatists anxious to end Yugoslavia's international isolation against a socialist old guard grouped round Mr Milosevic which is responding with reluctance to western pressure for political reform.
Mr Djukanovic roused hardliners' ire by demanding Mr Milosevic's withdrawal from any political role in Yugoslavia's future and by courting support abroad.
