DUBLIN - The Tanaiste, Mr Spring, has been urged to demand an EU monitoring team be sent to East Timor "to investigate claims that the Indonesian military is engaged in a new offensive to wipe out the last remaining resistance fighters," writes David Shanks.

The East Timor Ireland Solidarity Campaign co ordinator, Mr Tom Hyland, said there had been "a sharp increase in the numbers of Indonesian troops in the territory". Security in all strategic areas had been tightened and human rights abuses were increasing.
