Work on the new €6 million Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall, Co Offaly, is due to get under way this June, subject to planning.

Supermac’s owners Pat and Una McDonagh yesterday confirmed their intention to commence construction of the plaza near the US president’s ancestral home.

The Barack Obama Plaza promises 60 new jobs for Moneygall with an additional 75 jobs during construction of what is billed as as the only major purpose-built motorway service facility on the new M7 between Dublin and Limerick.

Mr Obama’s distant Irish cousin Henry Healy said: “The museum is an exciting prospect. It will enrich the experience for visitors and hopefully it will entice them to come into the village to visit us when they stop off.”
