Mobile phone charges for roaming and texting while overseas are set to drop sharply from today, writes Paul Cullen. Under new EU regulations, the maximum subscribers will pay when making a call within the EU will be 52 cent a minute.

Receiving a call will cost at most 23 cents a minute. A cap is also being imposed on the cost of sending texts while abroad. The maximum cost of text messages will fall to 13 cent from the current level of 29 to 39 cent. Receiving texts will remain free.
