Miyazaki, Japan - The foreign ministers of France and Germany will fly to the Philippines today in an attempt to avert any military intervention in the hostage crisis there.

Mr Hubert Vedrine and Mr Joschka Fischer will leave immediately after a G8 ministerial meeting in southern Japan, Mr Vedrine said yesterday.

A French couple, a German family of three and one Finn are among 20 people abducted from a Malaysian resort on April 23rd by the Muslim group Abu Abu Sayyaf.
