A trade deal between the EU and Latin American countries could affect Irish beef production negatively, Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith told the EU trade commissioner, Karel de Gucht, yesterday.

The meeting was one of a series with commissioners by Mr Smith to outline Irish concerns on a possible deal with the Mercosur group of Latin American countries.

He emphasised the impact such a deal might have on the high-value beef cut markets in the European Union.
