Chile's military has promised to help to determine the fate of more than 1,000 dissidents who disappeared after being arrested during Gen Augusto Pinochet's 17-year dictatorship.

President Ricardo Lagos praised the agreement between military officials, the government and human rights activists as another step to national reconciliation.
