The domiciliary midwife whose right to practise was upheld by the Supreme Court on Wednesday is suing the former Master of Holles Street Hospital, Dr Peter Boylan, for defamation, writes Carol Coulter. Papers were lodged about a month ago.
Dr Boylan initiated two of the four complaints against her to An Bord Altranais. The other two complaints came from the Rotunda. On the first complaint Ms Ann O Ceallaigh was acquitted of malpractice, and the Supreme Court found the other complaints to have been processed unfairly by An Bord Altranais.
Asked to comment on the outcome of the Supreme Court case, Dr Boylan said he would be happy to talk about the case and the issues it raised, but added, "legally I can't. It's better to wait for things to take their course".
The majority decision of the Supreme Court in favour of Ms O Ceallaigh on two out of the three issues brought to an end O Ceallaigh's her a three-year battle to work as a domiciliary midwife.
