Miami - A judge has temporarily blocked attempts by the mayor of Miami, Mr Joe Carollo, to fire his city manager in yet another twist in the political infighting that broke out after federal agents snatched the Cuban boy. Elian Gonzalez, last month. The city manager, Mr Donald Warshaw, won the reprieve on Tuesday night when a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge, Mr Philip Bloom, gave him time to prove allegations that he was dismissed for refusing Mr Carollo's order to break city and state laws.

Mr Warshaw is fighting for his job after being sacked last week by Mr Carollo. Reports indicate he was sacked for refusing to dismiss the police chief over the federal raid to remove Elian from his relatives. The mayor insists, however, he was sacked because of alleged financial improprieties that surfaced months ago.
