Gardai in Co Kildare yesterday detained four men in connection with the murders of Mr Darren Carey (20) and Mr Patrick Murray (19), whose bodies were found with gunshot wounds in the Grand Canal last January.

Two of the arrests took place in the Dublin area early yesterday and the other two men were arrested about 6.30 p.m., bringing to 27 the number made in connection with the murders.

The names of the men were not being released but it is understood they were from the west Dublin area and aged between 20 and 30 years of age They were arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows detention for a maximum of 72 hours.
