The public service union, Impact, has warned it is balloting members involved in meat inspection and carcase classification on industrial action.

If the outcome favours action, this would begin in early September, the beginning of the slaughtering enod. Because of the BSE crisis, large numbers of cattle are now in for intervention, and this action could adversely affect the amount of Irish beef being received into intervention.

The dispute is about staffing levels.
