There were sharp exchanges between Irish MEPs following a demand that the Parliament investigate the building of an MEPs' office complex in Brussels for an estimated £1 billion. Dublin MEP Ms Patricia McKenna said the Green Party estimated the offices could have been provided for half the amount. "For instance, a shower unit provided in each office is costing well in excess of £10,000," she said.

The Fianna Fail Connacht-Ulster MEP, Mr Mark Killilea, challenged her to "name names so that the matter can be investigated thoroughly." She should substantiate her accusations or apologise.

The Independent MEP for Munster, Mr Pat Cox, said he had formally asked the Parliament to investigate the allegations which "Ms McKenna be asked to substantiate or withdraw".
