THE FAMILY of Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt has postponed the scattering of his ashes along the river Shannon.
His widow Ellen and three brothers, Malachy, Michael and Alfie, visited Limerick last week for the unveiling of a bust in memory of the Angela's Ashesauthor at Leamy House, the site of Leamy School where Frank was a pupil. The McCourts had planned to cast some of his ashes into the Shannon on Friday.
However, McCourt’s widow Ellen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks after her husband’s death had to return to the US early that morning.
In one interview before he died, Frank McCourt indicated his wish to have his ashes scattered on the river Shannon. “I don’t want funeral services or memorials. Let them scatter my ashes over the Shannon and pollute the river.”
