Washington - The Republican presidential candidate, Mr John McCain, vowed yesterday to end negative campaigning for the rest of the White House race and accused Mr George W. Bush of making covert attacks on his record and character.

"I'm disappointed in the tenor of the attacks by his surrogates," the Arizona senator said, charging the Bush camp with calling McCain's supporters and branding Mr McCain a liar.

Mr Bush has denied the allegations.
