Las Vegas - Teams trained to deal with lethal chemicals and biological toxins worked yesterday to determine whether material seized from two men arrested here was the deadly biological agent anthrax.

Mr Larry Wayne Harris (46), a member of a white supremacist organisation, and inventor Mr William Job Leavitt (47), said by friends to be a Mormon missionary, were charged on Thursday with planning to use anthrax as a deadly weapon. A detention hearing for them has been scheduled for Monday.

Mr Harris had boasted that he had enough anthrax to "wipe out the city", an FBI informant said in a criminal complaint. Reports have said the pair may have been planning an attack on New York, although authorities did not confirm this.
