Any attempt to remove the teaching hospital role from a reconfigured Mater site would make it “impossible” to deliver highest standards of care, the heads of Dublin’s three medical schools have warned.

Prof Hannah McGee of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Prof Bill Powderly of UCD and Prof Dermot Kelleher of TCD wrote to the Minister for Health last week saying the facilities should be retained in any Mater plan.

Dr Reilly indicated any new plan for the National Children’s Hospital might not include its education and research facilities on site.
