The State's first national maritime college is to be established under a public-private partnership at a cost of £30 million, writes Lorna Siggins.

The college is to be built at Ringaskiddy on Cork Harbour and will train both merchant marine and Naval Service students, the Minister for Education, Dr Woods, and the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Fahey, said yesterday.

It will be run by the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and the Naval Service and accommodate 422 students annually.
