PRETORIA - President Nelson Mandela yesterday criticised South Africa's spiralling rate of women's abuse during a large public holiday rally outside his government offices.

Addressing more than 10,000 singing and dancing women who gathered at one of 20 National Women's Day rallies around the country, President Mandela called on the entire country to unite against the "evil" of violence against women Mr Mandela estimated about one in six South African women, were abused by their male partners.
