A former Provisional IRA member who allegedly stole £23,000 from the organisation is recovering after a "punishment" shooting in Belfast, according to republican sources.

The man, who moved to the US with his family earlier this month, was found in an entry off Upper Stanfield Street with gunshot wounds to his ankles on Sunday. He was ordered back from the US after taking the money from the Belfast Brigade, according to the Irish News. Local sources said the man was a finance officer for the organisation when the money went missing.
