Man shot dead at police checkpoint in Co Down

A man has died after Police Service of Northern Ireland officers manning a checkpoint in Co Down opened fire on a vehicle.

A man has died after Police Service of Northern Ireland officers manning a checkpoint in Co Down opened fire on a vehicle.

A PSNI spokesman said the driver of the car was killed at the checkpoint on Church Street in Ballynahinch.

Three men and two women have been arrested.

The shooting is understood to have happened near the East Down Institute Technical College. The PSNI refused to disclose the circumstances which led to officers opening fire.

The Police Ombudsman's Office has begun an investigation into the shooting.
