Man remanded on shooting charge

A man has appeared in court in connection with the shooting of a supermarket worker in Balla, Co Mayo, on Tuesday last.

A man has appeared in court in connection with the shooting of a supermarket worker in Balla, Co Mayo, on Tuesday last.

Vincent O’Donnell (47), Mayo Abbey, Claremorris, appeared before Judge Mary Devins at Ballina District Court. He is charged with assaulting Dympna Walshe, Kiltimagh Road, Balla, at Gaughan’s Costcutter, causing her serious harm.

Ms Walshe is recovering at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

Det Garda Róisín Loftus said when he was charged at Castlebar, Mr O’Donnell replied: “I am really sorry for causing harm to Dympna Walshe. I have destroyed my life with it as well. Sorry to Dympna’s family and the McNamaras.”

Gary Mulchrone, solicitor for Mr O’Donnell, told the judge his client required psychiatric assessment. Judge Devins remanded Mr O’Donnell in custody to Harristown Court, Castlerea, on Friday next. She requested medical treatment for him if necessary.
