A Dublin prisoner pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court yesterday to raping another sex offender he shared a cell with in 1996. It is the first case of prison rape to be reported and successfully prosecuted in the courts in recent years.Anthony Cawley (31) admitted rape of a 27-year-old prisoner in Arbour Hill on September 24th, 1996. The victim is serving a six-year sentence for a rape offence.Cawley, who is being held in Wheatfield Prison, is serving a 20-year sentence for rape, as well as a concurrent 10-year term for attempted murder. He is due for release in 2002.Mr Justice O'Higgins remanded Cawley in continuing custody to April 20th. Mr Anthony Sammon SC, prosecuting, requested the preparation of a victim impact report and defence counsel, Mr Barry White SC, asked for a probation report on Cawley.
