A man has died following a road incident in Co Sligo earlier today.

A man has died following a road incident in Co Sligo earlier today.

The pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at about 5.45am on the N17, Galway to Sligo, road at Toberbride, Collooney. The victim was taken to Sligo General Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The road was closed earlier for examination but has since reopened, and diversions have been lifted.

Witnesses are asked to contact Sligo gardaí on 071 9157000, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

The latest fatality comes after four people were killed in what the Road Safety Authority (RSA) called “an awful weekend” on the State’s roads.

The four died in separate collisions, three of which took place early on Sunday.

Yesterday's death brings to 164 the number of people killed on the roads since the start of the year.
