Man killed in Westmeath road collision

A man has been killed and at least one more seriously injured following a three-car collision in Co Westmeath tonight.

The incident happened shortly after 6pm near Fardrum outside Athlone on the main Dublin road.

The emergency services are still at the scene and there are severe traffic delays in the area.

Meanwhile the victim of a two-vehicle collision near Virginia in Co Cavan yesterday evening was tonight named by gardai as Brian Connelly, 56, from Old Bawn, Tallaght, Dublin.

Mr Connelly was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
