A man was shot dead in Co Down yesterday in a gangland-style killing which police believe could be linked to the drugs trade.

The victim was targeted at a house on Hazelbrook Avenue, Bangor, shortly after midday. Another man was taken to hospital with wounds that are not life-threatening.

A man was arrested on Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, by officers investigating the killing. Eyewitnesses said several police cars surrounded a vehicle and the man was immediately put into a forensic boiler suit.

Chief Supt Nigel Grimshaw said: “I will not speculate on a motive for this murder. It is crime-related, not terrorist-related, and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact detectives.”

Police said no members of the security forces were involved. One possible motive is drugs.

Hazelbrook Avenue is a mainly residential area of two-storey terraced houses close to Castle Park.
