A motorcyclist was killed while preparing for a race today in Co Westmeath

The 27-year-old biker hit a tree during a familiarisation lap at the Race of the South in Walderstown, Athlone, at about 12.30pm, gardaí said.

The race was organised by the Fore Motor Cycle Racing Club.

The dead man had been named as Andrew Neill, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

A spokesman for the racing club offered his sympathies to the family.
