A man shot in both legs in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry was a convicted rapist, it was revealed today.

The 37-year-old was with his partner and her two children, one aged just 14 weeks, at the time.

Two men dressed in black burst into the couple’s home in Rosemount Gardens late last night and fired up to six shots. The victim was in a front room.

Police said the man was wounded in both legs. It was understood he underwent surgery in the city’s Altnagelvin Hospital today.

It was not known if his partner and the two children — the second is aged six — were in the same room when the gunmen opened fire.

The man was convicted last month of raping a girl in the city in 2000. He was due to be sentenced later.
