A 36-year-old man was recovering in hospital in Derry yesterday from injuries sustained when he was attacked by a masked gang outside his home in the Creggan area of the city on Monday night. The victim was taken from his home to waste ground near Fanad Drive and assaulted by five masked men armed with iron bars and sticks.

"The victim suffered numerous puncture wounds to his arms, legs and head, as well as to other parts of his body," an RUC spokesman said. "The attack bears all the hallmarks of a paramilitary style assault."
