A man has been charged with assaulting a Garda sergeant during a stabbing incident in Donegal over the weekend.

A man has been charged with assaulting a Garda sergeant during a stabbing incident in Donegal over the weekend.

John Boyle (46) of Lek Cottages, Letterkenny appeared before Mullingar District Court charged with four counts of assault causing harm to four men, including the Garda sergeant.

Sergeant Eunan Walsh said Boyle, who is also charged with possession of a knife at Lower Main St Letterkenny yesterday morning, made no reply after charge.

He was released on bail to appear at Letterkenny District Court on September 15.

A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and Judge William Hamill heard there may be additional charges.

Legal aid was granted to Boyle who is not working and solicitor Paid Dorrian was assigned.
