A 30 year-old man appeared in court today following the seizure of nearly 18kg of industrial explosives at a house near Oranmore, in Co Galway, at the weekend.

Oliver Mannion, Rinville West, Oranmore, Co Galway, appeared before Galway District Court charged with the unlawful possession of the explosives at Rinville West on September 6th, contrary to Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1997.

Garda Paudie O’Shea gave evidence of charging Mr Mannion at Mill Street Garda Station, Galway, at noon yesterday. He said Mannion replied “no comment” when the single charge was put to him.

Judge Mary Fahy refused bail and she remanded Mr Mannion in custody to appear before Harristown Remand District Court on September 12th.
