PSNI detectives from the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) have arrested a man in relation to the murder of a senior UDA figure nearly 10 years ago.

The 33-year-old man was arrested in North Belfast this morning and police are also carrying out a number of searches in the area.

UDA member Tommy English (40) was gunned down in front of his wife at their home on the Ballyduff Estate, Newtownabbey in October 2000.

His killing was part of a feud between rival loyalist factions the UDA and the UVF.

A PSNI spokesman said 15 people have been arrested in relation to the killing with 11 men being charged to date.

The HET was established to deal with over 3,000 so-called cold cases of the troubles up to 1998.
