A man arrested for questioning in connection with the death of a woman in Dublin last weekend has been freed without charge.

Mary O’Rourke (48) died in St James’s Hospital on Sunday. She was found unconscious in sheltered accommodation on James’s Street on Friday night.

The mother of five had suffered serious head injuries in a beating and gardaí suspect she was thrown down stairs.

A postmortem on the body of Ms O’Rourke proved inconclusive. Although she was assaulted, investigating officers do not believe it was necessarily her injuries that caused her death.

A Garda spokesman said they were awaiting the results of toxicology tests which may assist the investigation.

The man, who was arrested at the house on Friday night, was freed last night without charge pending instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
