Man found hurt in Garda cell dies

A man who was found unconscious and suffering serious head injuries in a Cork Garda cell last week died this evening.

A man who was found unconscious and suffering serious head injuries in a Cork Garda cell last week died this evening.

The man was found by officers lying on the floor of the cell in Togher Garda Station in the city at 8.20am on Friday.

The man (51) was arrested on Carrigrohane Road shortly after 6.40am on Friday following a report of criminal damage on Victoria Cross Road. He arrived in Togher Garda Station at 7.05am and was put in a cell alone.

Gardaí say he was checked a number of times but was found to be injured during one of those checks.

Supt Pat McCarthy of the Cork North Division was appointed to investigate the case. A post mortem will take place in due course, gardai said.
