Gardaí have launched an investigation following the death of a prisoner at the Midlands Prison in Co Laois.
A garda spokesman said the inmate was found dead in his cell shortly after 1am this morning.
The cause of death is unknown.
He was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out tomorrow.
