A Cork man drowned yesterday morning after he went swimming off Ballycotton Pier at 7 a.m.

Mr Joe Callnan (50), of the Grange area in the city, had been walking on the pier when he decided to go for a swim. A friend who accompanied him is understood to have alerted the Ballycotton lifeboat when she saw him in difficulties, but he died before the lifeboat arrived.

His body was removed to Midleton Hospital, where a post mortem was carried out.
