A 51-year-old man was drowned early today when he apparently slipped on a pier in Rosmoney, Co Mayo.

It is believed he slipped as he returned to his boat to make the two-mile journey to Inishlyre Island in Clew Bay. He was last seen around 3.30 am following a function which he attended at the nearby Mayo Sailing Club premises in Rosmoney, which is near Westport.

The alarm was raised this morning when his body was spotted in the water beside his boat. Gardaí say the death has all the signs of being “a tragic accident.”
