ONE man died and four people were injured after disturbances at a halting site in Neillstown, west Dublin, last night. Four men were being questioned by gardai early today about the incidents.

Gardai believe that the dead man, who was in his 20s and lived at the halting site near Wheatfield Prison, may have been struck by a van. The fatality followed what gardai described as a "fairly vicious melee" involving a number of men, some of whom arrived at the site shortly before the disturbances began.

Two men and a woman were taken to Meath Hospital, while another man was taken to St James's Hospital. Gardai said that some of them had suffered knife injures, none of which were life-threatening.

A number of weapons were recovered from the scene.
