A 53-year-old Co Tyrone father of 10 who allegedly beat his children and burnt their toys to teach them a lesson, was branded a paedophile yesterday at his Belfast Crown Court trial.

One of his daughters, now a 32 and a mother of three, fought to hold back tears as she also accused her mother of doing nothing to protect her or her sisters.

The man, who cannot be named, denies a total of 18 sex offences involving her and two sisters, including raping an elder sister at least five times.

The man, who cannot be named, denies a total of 18 sex offences involving her and two sisters, including raping an elder sister at least five times.

His daughter claimed that he regularly indecently assaulted her as a child and recalled two occasions when her mother realised something was happening, but did nothing about it.

Under cross-examination, she accepted she "hated, loathed and despised" her father, but denied she and her sisters had concocted the allegations against him because he left their mother to marry another woman.
