A man was charged yesterday with threatening a lord mayor of Dublin with a syringe after stealing his mobile phone in the city centre. Mr Alan Giles (20), of Barry Avenue, Finglas, was charged with threatening the then lord mayor, Mr Brendan Lynch, with a syringe at Eccles Street on May 23rd and criminal damage to the official car. He is already accused of stealing a £300 phone from him.

A State solicitor, Mr Liam Mulholland, said the DPP had directed the cases to be heard on indictment in the Circuit Court and that a book of evidence would be ready in two weeks.

The defendant was remanded in custody.
